Goal: After listening to a fiction read-aloud, students will know the meaning of three Tier Two vocabulary words.

Materials: Fancy Nancy (O'Connor)

What to Do

Prepare

Select three Tier Two vocabulary words to teach your students. A list of suggested words appears below. Write the vocabulary words on the board or on chart paper.

Model/Instruct

1. Introduce the story.

Today we are going to read a story entitled Fancy Nancy.

2. Introduce the three vocabulary words you have chosen.

Before we read the story, I want to introduce some new words that we will come across. Please repeat each word after I say it.

3. Read the story.

Let’s read the story. Make sure to listen for today’s vocabulary words and to think about how they are used in the story. If you hear a vocabulary word while I am reading, raise your hand.

4. Define key vocabulary words. See definitions below.

Let’s think about our vocabulary words. The word ______________ means ____________. Does anyone remember how this word was used in the text?

Call on students to answer the question. Then refer to the text to show how the word was used in context. Repeat this process for each vocabulary word.

Practice

Now let’s practice what we’ve learned.


accessories

Accessories means items you wear in addition to a basic outfit, like gloves and jewelry.

I’m dressed for work, but I must put on my accessories. If you wear too many accessories, people will not pay attention to what you’re saying.

I’m going to name some items. If you think the item is adding to a complete outfit, say accessory. Otherwise, stay quiet. Ready?

chauffeur

Chauffeur means a person who drives someone else around wherever they want to go. What’s the word?

The chauffeur was very polite when he opened the car door and asked where we wanted to go. Is your mom your chauffeur?

I’m going to name some jobs. If you think a person in this job probably drives others around, say chauffeur. Otherwise, stay quiet. Ready?

plume

Plume means a big bunch of fancy looking feathers. What’s the word?

A peacock has a green and blue plume for a tail. Would you wear a hat with a plume?

I’m going to name some people. If you think the person might wear a big bunch of fancy feathers, say plume. Otherwise, stay quiet. Ready?

stupendous

Stupendous means really wonderful and amazing. What’s the word?

Seeing a whale in the ocean was a stupendous sight. When you practice hard, you can give a stupendous performance.

tiara

Tiara means a pretty little crown made of jewels. What’s the word?

Girls wear tiaras more than boys. Do you think a tiara would be comfortable?

Adjust

For Advanced Students:

If time permits, have students create more examples for the vocabulary words.

For Struggling Students:

If time permits, have students record the words on a Vocabulary Discovery Chart or in a Word Journal.

For ELL Students:

In order to help ELL students learn the words, it may be helpful to use realia and/or to teach cognates.
