This strand will help you teach students how to handwrite each letter of the alphabet.

The objective of the letter writing sequence of activities is to teach students to handwrite each letter of the alphabet properly.

The sequence of activities here was constructed on the following principles:

• We use the amsti sequence to introduce letters, since that sequence is also used when introducing letter sounds, and letter sounds and letter writing are most often introduced together.
• Each letter introduced is reintroduced in the very next lesson to provide adequate daily practice.
• Several days after that, we use a fluency-building activity to help students become automatic in writing the letter--i.e., to become so fast they don't have to think about it.
• Once multiple letters have been introduced, we use an accuracy-building activity to make sure students are not confusing letters.
