What to do
- Remind students of the meanings of prefixes and suffixes. A prefix is added at the beginning of a word and changes the meaning of the word. Unkind, for example is un + kind. A suffix is added to the end of a word and may tell you if the word is acting as a noun, adjective, verb, or adverb. For example, the word quickly ends with the suffix -ly and makes an adverb out of the adjective quick.
- Share the Big, Bigger, Biggest Worksheet with students and make sure they understand the directions. The sentences in the worksheet are taken from literature and contain some challenging material which provides opportunities for discussion.
- Let students work independently and then discuss the results when everyone is through. Read the sentences aloud together and discuss their meanings.
