Grade: 1, 2, 3 |
Group Size: Small Group, Large Group, Whole Class |
Length: 20 minutes |
Materials: titles of the five parts of a letter |
Goal: After reading a story, the student can write a letter about the story. |
Items: Students will review heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature. |
What to do
- Students will read a story and discuss the story together focusing on elements such as key characters, setting, main idea, etc.
- Students will practice handwriting by writing a letter about the story they just read to either a classmate or the teacher. Before the students begin writing, make sure to review with students the components of effective letters: heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature. If students are unfamiliar with letter writing, you may modify this activity by drafting a letter together as a class. You may want to specify what the letter should be about.
- Have students exchange letters. While reading their partner's letters, students should be able to identify a heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature.
- Have students discuss one another's letters in terms of both content and format.
- For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
