Materials: Leveled readers, index cards
What to Do
Prepare
Make a set of index cards for each group. Each card in the set should have one of the following labels: Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How.
Model/Instruct
1. Explain the lesson.
Today we will apply what we have learned about identifying supporting details to a book. You will choose a reader and use one of these cards to find important details.
2. Review how to use the index cards.
You will read the book. After you finish reading, you will take one card. You will read the card and then find a detail from the book that matches the card. For example, if the card says Who, you will find a detail about an important character. You will keep going until you have used all of the cards.
You may have students complete the activity individually, in pairs, or in small groups.
Practice
3. Students read the book and use the index cards to identify important details in it.
4. Make sure that each student has chosen an appropriate leveled book and that he or she uses the index cards correctly.
5. Discuss how using the index cards helps identify supporting details. Ask students questions like:
Now that you have used the index cards, what do you think the most important details are? How do the details help you understand the book? Can you use the details to figure out the main idea? What is the main idea of this book?
Adjust
For Advanced Students:
Ask these students find two details for each index card and then use all of the details to determine the main idea of the book.
For Struggling Students:
These students may need support finding a detail for each card. Encourage them to find details for the cards they can. For the difficult cards, you can pair them with other students who have read the same book.
For ELL Students:
These students may need help understanding the words on the index cards and discussing which details match each card. Allow these students to point to the detail in the book or read it word for word.
