What to do
- Form a small group. Show your students pictures, sounding out the corresponding words.
- Model how to "chop" the sounds of the words. While holding up a picture of a cat, gently strike your left shoulder with the side of your right hand and say /c/, the initial sound in the word cat.
- Gently strike your left forearm with the side of your right hand and say /a/, the medial sound.
- Gently strike your left wrist with the side of your right hand and say /t/, the ending sound.
- Guide students in chopping sounds for other picture cards. Begin with simple, three-phoneme words and move on to more difficult words with blends and four or more phonemes.
