Activity Type: Build Fluency
Activity Form: Standard
Grade: K, 1, 2
Group Size: Whole Class
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: Compound words written on index cards, music
Goal: Given a printed compound word, the student can say its sound with automaticity (compound word -> "compound word").
Items: All compound words learned so far.

What to do

  1. Before beginning the game, write compound words on index cards. Write half the word on one card and half the word on a separate card. For example, write “air” on one index card, and write “plane” on a second index card. Make enough cards so that each student can have one.
  2. Today we are going to play a game called Mix, Mix, Match! I am going to give each of you a card with a word on it. When the music starts you need to walk around the room with your card.
  3. Then, when the music stops I am going to say “mix.” When you hear me say “mix” you should trade cards with someone in the room. Make sure you read your card aloud to the person you give it to. We will repeat that a few times.
  4. The last time the music stops I am going to say “match.” When you hear me say “match” you need to find the person who has the other half of your word. Let’s say Suzy has a card with “air” on it, and Mary has a card that says “plane” on it. They should find each other when I say “match.” What word is that?
  5. Does anybody have any questions?
  6. Observe students. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
