Activity Type: Build Fluency
Activity Form: Game
Grade: 1, 2
Group Size: Whole Class
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: Index Cards, Music, Image:Contraction List.doc
Goal: Given printed contractions and the words that form the contractions, the student can identify which words match the contraction (it is -> “it’s”).
Items: All contractions learned so far

What to do

  1. Before beginning the game, write all contractions on index cards. On separate index cards, write the words that match the contractions. For example, write "don’t" on one index card and write the words "do not" on a second index card. Make enough cards so that each student can have one.
  2. Today we are going to play a game called Mix, Mix, Match! I am going to give each of you a word card. When the music starts you need to walk around the room with your card.
  3. Then, when the music stops I am going to say “mix.” When you hear me say “mix” you should trade cards with someone in the room. Make sure you read your card aloud to the person you give it to. We will repeat that a few times.
  4. The last time the music stops I am going to say “match.” When you hear me say “match” you need to find the person who has the card that matches yours. If you have a contraction in your hand, you need to find the person that has the two words that match your contraction. If you have two words in your hand, you need to find the person who has the contraction that stands for those words.
  5. Let’s say Suzy has a card with “do not” on it, and Mary has a card with “don’t” on it. They should find each other when I say “match.”
  6. Does anybody have any questions?
  7. Observe students. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
