Activity Form: Game
Grade: K, 1
Group Size: Small Group
Length: 15 minutes
Materials:
Goal: Given picture cards, students can match pictures according to the initial sounds of the words the pictures represent.
Items: Initial letter sounds in words

What to do

  1. Select appropriate picture cards for this activity. The cards should include pairs with common initial sounds (the mouse, mat, cat, cake, goat, gum, tree, truck, seal, sock, window, watermelon, sled, slide, ball and bat pictures, for example).
  2. Have your students place the picture cards face-down, organized into an even number of rows and columns.
  3. Play proceeds by turns. The student whose turn it is flips over two cards and names the picture and identifies the corresponding initial sounds. If the initial sounds match, the student keeps the cards. If the student is having a difficult time identifying the initial sounds, he or she may ask the group for assistance.
  4. Students continue play until all cards are matched. If a student consistently has difficulties, you may wish to record observations in an Activity Log.
