Activity Form: Game |
Grade: K, 1, 2 |
Group Size: Small Group |
Length: 10 minutes |
Materials: Irregular word cards, index cards, 2 baskets, timer |
Goal: Given a printed irregular word, students can say its sound with automaticity (irregword -> "irregword"). |
Items: All irregular words learned so far. |
What to do
- Before beginning the game, print two sets of Irregular Word Cards. Glue them to index cards, and laminate if possible. Place each set of word cards into a sturdy basket or bucket.
- Divide students into two teams of four or five students each.
- Today we are going to have a relay race. Can anyone explain to me what a relay race is? Call on a student who has raised their hand to give an explanation.
- Today’s relay race is going to be with words. Each team will have a bucket of words in front of them. You must line up in front of your bucket in a single file line.
- When I say “go” the first player will walk up to the bucket and pick out a word. If you read the word correctly you can keep it for your team. If you read it incorrectly you must put it back.
- Then you need to walk back to your team’s line and give the first person in line a high five. As soon as you give that high five, go to the end of the line while the next person goes up to the bucket to read a word.
- Call four students up to the front of the classroom and use them to demonstrate for the class how you want the students to move around the room.
- The team with the most word cards when the timer goes off is the winner.
- Set the timer for 3 minutes and say “go.”
- Observe students. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
