Goal: Given a printed irregular word, the student can say its sound with automaticity (irregword -> "irregword"). |
Items: All irregular words learned so far. |
What to do
- Before beginning the game print Irregular Word Cards. Glue them to index cards, and laminate if possible.
- Today you are going to play tic-tac-toe with your partner. Raise your hand if you already know how to play tic-tac-toe. Good. Clarify instructions if any students are unsure of the rules.
- I am going to give each set of partners a tic-tac-toe board. I am also going to give you some word cards. This is how my version of tic-tac-toe is a little different. Before you can take your turn, you must pick a word from the pile on your desk and read the word.
- Your partner will give you a thumbs up or a thumbs down. If you read the word correctly you can take your turn and make a mark on the board. If you don’t read the word correctly, then your turn is skipped.
- Observe students. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
