Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Standard
Grade: 1, 2
Group Size: Small Group
Length: 10 minutes
Materials: letter combination cards
Goal: Given a letter combination, the student can identify words that contain that combination ("oo" -> "moon").
Items: All letter combinations learned so far.

What to do

  1. Before beginning the activity, assign students to pairs. Each pair will need six to ten letter combination cards. Write the following categories on the board: food, feeling, color, sport, animal. Alternatively, your categories can be: noun, verb, adjective, adverb. Or, you may choose instead to use categories that relate to something you are studying in class.
  2. Today, we are going to do an activity. You will have to think hard. Are you ready? You will do this activity with a partner.
  3. You and your partner will get letter combination cards. Divide up the cards so you have an equal amount. So, if I am playing with Sammy and we get 6 cards, I will take 3 and Sammy will take 3.
  4. I will pick one of the categories on the board. Then, I will show Sammy one of my cards. Let’s say I pick the category “animal” and I give her the card with “wh” on it. Sammy has to try to think of an animal that has the letter combination “wh” in its name. Can any of you think of an animal with “wh”? Call on students to answer. Great job! A whale has “wh” in its name.
  5. Then Sammy will pick a category for me and give me a card. I will have to try to think of a word.
  6. We will go back and forth until we have used all of our cards.
  7. This game can be really tricky – you will have to think really hard. Sometimes, you may not be able to come up with a word. Your partner can help you. It’s ok if the two of you cannot think of a word. Just try your best.
  8. Does anyone have any questions? Answer questions, clarifying the activity.
  9. Walk around and observe as students work. For students who struggle, offer hints and make a note in an Activity Log.
  10. Afterwards, you may choose to ask students if they came across a category and letter combination for which they could not find a word. Ask all of the students in the class to try to think of a word that would work.
