Letter combination accuracy, Sounds Around the Room
From FreeReading
Activity Type: Build Accuracy |
Activity Form: Standard |
Grade: 1, 2 |
Group Size: Whole Class |
Length: 10 minutes |
Materials: Blackboard, chalk |
Goal: Given a letter combination, the student can identify words that contain that combination ("oo" -> "moon"). |
Items: All letter combinations learned so far. |
What to do
- Write a few letter combinations learned so far on the board. Choose one student to be the leader.
- Today, I have a challenge for you. I am going to ask the leader to choose one of the letter combinations on the board. Then, I am going to give you a minute or so to try to think of some words that have that letter combination in them.
- After you’ve had time to think, we are going to go around the room. Each of you must say a word with that letter combination.
- Here’s the tricky part. The same word can only be said three times. As you play the game more often, you may choose to lower this number to make it more challenging.
- When I call on you, you will say your word. I will write the word on the board. If the word has already been said by someone else, I will put a checkmark next to it. After it has been said three times, I will cross it off so you know that you cannot say that word again.
- Try your best to come up with a new word. Only say a word someone else has already said if you cannot think of a new word.
- Let’s see if we can get around the whole class with everyone saying a word.
- Does anyone have any questions? Answer questions, clarifying the activity.
- For students who struggle, offer help and make a note in an Activity Log.
- You may choose to have this be a standing challenge to your class. You can play every day before recess or lunch until your class completes it successfully.
