Activity Type: Build Fluency
Activity Form: Game
Grade: 1, 2
Group Size: Small Group
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: A deck of 30 cards with designated long vowel words
Goal: Given a printed letter combination, the student can say its sound ( sh -> /sh/ )
Items: Long vowel letter combinations, such as a, a_e, ay, and ai

What to do

  1. Before beginning the game, create a deck of at least 30 cards of words with long vowel letter combinations. For example, if you are working on the long /a/ sound, use words with the letter combinations: a, a_e, ay, and ai.
  2. Today we are going to play a game called Pass! The object of this game is to be the first one to get rid of all of your cards. Each player is going to get the same number of cards. One person will start. They will put down one card for everyone to see. They must read the card and tell us what the long vowel combination is. For example, if I put down the card “rain,” I would say, “rain, /ai/.”
  3. The next player must put down a card with the same exact letter combination. So the person after me could put down the card “pail”, because pail also has “ai.” But the person after me could not put down “say,” because “say” does not have the “ai” combination. If the next person does not have an “ai” card to put down, then he must say, “pass!” and his turn is skipped.
  4. If you put down the wrong card you must take it back in your hand and you lose your turn.
  5. Keep going around the circle with “ai” words, until every player is out of “ai” words. Once everybody is out of cards for the letter combination, the next person in the circle chooses a new card to place down.
  6. Does anybody have any questions? Answer any questions and clarify directions.
  7. If a student is struggling, call on him individually in order to ensure he gets practice with the skill.
  8. Observe small groups of students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
