| Materials: Reading passages that have long vowels through out the text. The passages can focus on one vowel at a time or can incorporate multiple long vowels., A chart that has the vowel pattern at the top of each column. | 
| Goal: Students will be able to sort and identify the different patterns associated with long vowels. |

What to do
- Once you have taught a long vowel pattern to your students, you must select a book or passage that contains multiple words with the long vowel you have taught.
- Identify the patterns possible for that particular vowel.
- Have students take their Long Vowel Chart and begin reading the book or passage.
- As students read, they will come across a word that contains the long vowel they are searching for. Students are to analyze the pattern and place it in the appropriate column of their Long Vowel Charts.
- Have students compare their charts to determine if they have placed the words in the appropriate column.
