Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Game
Grade: K, 1
Group Size: Whole Class
Length: 5 minutes
Materials:
Goal: Given multiple sounds, the student can blend them into a word ( /m/ + /a/ + /t/ -> /mat/ )
Items: 1 syllable words

What to do

  1. Before beginning the activity, create a list of simple sentences. Include in each sentence, a three or four letter word you can ask the students to blend. Here are some examples:
    • I gave him my /p/ /e/ /n/.
    • Sam got on the /b//u//s/.
    • The pig ran in the /m//u//d/.
    • Suzy took my favorite /h//a//t/.
  2. Today we are going to play a game. I am going to say a sentence and you must help me finish it.
  3. Listen to my first sentence. “I gave him my /p//e//n/.” What did I give him?
  4. Call on a student with his hand raised. Good. I gave him my pen.
  5. Repeat the procedure with more sentences and continue calling on students individually. (Students love to be first to finish the sentence, so if you let the whole group respond, the student in need of the most practice will get the least.)
  6. If students get good at oral blending, ask them to come up with their own sentence to say for the class.
  7. Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
