Phonological and phonemic awareness
From FreeReading
The two terms phonological awareness and phonemic awareness both refer to the ability to identify and manipulate parts of spoken language, but they refer to different skills:
- Phonological awareness means the ability to identify and manipulate words, syllables, onset-rimes, and individual sounds or phonemes in spoken language.
- Phonemic awareness means the ability to identify and manipulate phonemes specifically. Phonemic awareness is a subset of phonological awareness.
Many of the research findings on phonological awareness are specific to phonemes and so are more properly referred to as phonemic awareness findings. You can review some of them here.
