What to Do

Prepare

Print out a copy of the Prefix/Suffix: Trunk or Tail? worksheet for each student in the class.

Create a large version of the Prefix/Suffix: Trunk or Tail? worksheet on chart paper.

Write a prefix or suffix on the board.

Model/Instruct

1. Review the meaning of the prefix or suffix on the board with the class.

2. Provide an example of a word using said prefix or suffix.

Today, we will learn more about prefixes and suffixes by completing this worksheet.

3. Model how to use the Prefix/Suffix: Trunk or Tail? worksheet with the prefix or suffix that you are reviewing.

This worksheet is called Trunk or Tail? That means that if we use it with a prefix, we write the prefix on the trunk because that is the first part of the word. If we use it with a suffix, we write the suffix on the tail, because that is the last part of the word.

  • Is (selected prefix or suffix) a prefix or a suffix?
  • Where should we write (selected prefix or suffix)?
  • Write the prefix or suffix on the trunk or tail, accordingly.
  • Who can give us a word that contains (selected prefix or suffix)?
  • Write the word in the body of the elephant.
  • Who can tell us another word that contains (selected prefix or suffix)?
  • Write it in the body of the elephant.

Practice

4. Have students complete Prefix/Suffix: Trunk or Tail? worksheet.

Now it’s your turn to complete the Prefix/Suffix: Trunk or Tail? worksheet by coming up with words that contain a prefix or a suffix. Make sure to write at least three words in the elephant’s body. Remember to complete each part of the Trunk or Tail? worksheet.

5. Walk around the classroom to monitor the students’ performance on this task.

6. As a wrap-up, you may ask students to share their work.

Adjust

For Advanced Students:

Encourage these students to come up with five or more words. You may even choose to have a contest to see who can come up with the most words containing prefixes or suffixes.

For Struggling Students:

Students who need extra help may work with partners. If students have trouble coming up with words, help them brainstorm a list of some to use.

For ELL Students:

ELL students may need another explanation of the meaning of the prefix or suffix before generating words that contain the prefix or suffix.
