Lesson Type: Build Mastery
Grade: 2, 3
Group Size: Individual, Pair, Small Group, Large Group, Whole Class
Length: 15 minutes
Goal: Given a list of prefixes, suffixes, and root words, students will expand their knowledge of words containing these parts of speech by creating a Word Flip Book.

Materials: Word Flip Book (print here), scissors, board or chart paper.

What to Do

Prepare

Create one flip book per student in advance.

Print out one copy of the Word Flip Book for each student.

First, cut around the border of the flip book.

Second, cut on the two dotted lines.

Third, fold the top part of the flip book over the bottom part.

Display on the board four to five prefixes, root words, and suffixes that students have already learned.

Model/Instruct

1. Review the prefixes, root words, and suffixes that you have displayed.

Today, we will learn more about prefixes, root words, and suffixes by creating a word flip book. Before we begin, let’s review the prefixes, root words, and suffixes with which we are going to work.

Direct the students’ attention to the displayed prefixes, root words, and suffixes on the board. State each aloud and have students repeat after you.

2. Show students how to complete their word flip book.

I will show you how to complete your flip book first and then you will have a chance to complete the flip book yourselves.

Model how to complete the flip book by writing a prefix or suffix and root word in the designated sections of the flip book. Have students write the same information in their own flip books.

Practice

3. Have students complete flip book pages, making another two words.

Now, it is your turn to complete the rest of your word flip book. Remember to put the prefixes, root words, and suffixes in the correct places.

Encourage students to complete this activity without your assistance. Do not intervene unless they are really struggling. For additional information on helping students, consult the Adjust section below.

4. Walk around the classroom to monitor the students’ performance on this task.

5. Have each student share a page from his or her word flip book. Make sure that you go over all words at this time. Afterwards, encourage students to refer back to their flip books when they come across these words in the reading of other books. Consider providing additional empty flip book pages to students so that they can add new words to their flip books over time.

Adjust

For Advanced Students:

Provide additional prefixes, root words, and suffixes for this activity so they can make more than three words. These students may find that they can make three-part words using a prefix, a root word, and a suffix. Allow time for these children to share their findings with the class.

For Struggling Students:

Have struggling students draw a small picture of each word next to a definition of the word. Then, help them come up with a sentence for each word orally.

For ELL Students:

Have ELL students draw a small picture of each word next to a definition of the word. Then, help them come up with a sentence for each word orally. Point out cognates where applicable.
