What to Do

Prepare

Print out a copy of the Prefix/Suffix Cube for each student in the class. Create a large version of the Prefix/Suffix Cube on chart paper.

Write a prefix or a suffix in the box at the top of the Prefix/Suffix Cube.

Model/Instruct

1. Review the meaning of prefixes and suffixes with the class.

2. Review the meaning of the selected prefix or suffix written in the box at the top of the Prefix/Suffix Cube.

Today, we will learn more about prefixes and suffixes by completing this worksheet.

3. Model how to use the Prefix/Suffix Cube with the prefix or suffix that you are reviewing.

We have (selected prefix or suffix) in the box on the top of the cube.

  • How can I draw (selected prefix or suffix)?
  • Draw a quick picture on the top face of the cube.
  • What does (selected prefix or suffix) mean?
  • Write the meaning on the left face of the cube.
  • Who can give us a word that contains (selected prefix or suffix)?
  • Write it on the right face of the cube.
  • Who can give us another word that contains (selected prefix or suffix)?
  • Write it on the right face of the cube.
  • Who can give us another word that contains (selected prefix or suffix)?
  • Write it on the right face of the cube.

Practice

4. Have students complete prefix/suffix cube worksheet.

Now it’s your turn to complete a Prefix/Suffix Cube by drawing, writing the meaning, and coming up with words that contain (selected prefix or suffix). Make sure to include at least three words. Remember to complete each part of the Prefix/Suffix Cube.

5. Walk around the classroom to monitor the students’ performance on this task.

6. As a wrap-up, you may ask students to share their work.

Adjust

For Advanced Students:

Encourage these students to come up with five or more words. You may even choose to have a contest to see who can come up with the most words using the selected prefix or suffix.

For Struggling Students:

Students who need extra help may work with partners. If students have trouble coming up with words, help them brainstorm a list of some to use.

For ELL Students:

ELL students may need an explanation of the meaning of the prefix or suffix before using it in a word.
