Create a large version of the Prefix/Suffix Web on chart paper.
Model/Instruct
1. Review the meaning of prefixes and suffixes with the class.
2. Provide an example of a word using a prefix and a word using a suffix.
Today, we will learn more about prefixes and suffixes by completing this worksheet.
3. Model how to use the Prefix/Suffix Web worksheet with a prefix or suffix that you are reviewing.
Write the prefix or suffix in the middle circle.
- Who can give us a word that contains (selected prefix/suffix)?
- Write it in one circle.
- Who can tell us another word that contains (selected prefix/suffix)?
- Write it in a second circle.
- Who can tell us another word that contains (selected prefix/suffix)?
- Write it in a third circle.
- Who can tell us one more word that contains (selected prefix/suffix)?
- Write it in a fourth circle.
Practice
4. Have students complete the Prefix/Suffix Web worksheet.
Now it’s your turn to complete a Prefix/Suffix Web worksheet by coming up with a prefix or a suffix and then creating words that contain that prefix or suffix. Remember to complete each part of the Prefix/Suffix Web.
5. Walk around the classroom to monitor the students’ performance on this task.
6. As a wrap-up, you may ask students to share their work.
Adjust
For Advanced Students:
Encourage these students to come up with more than four words. They can add circles for additional words. You may even choose to have a contest to see who can come up with the most words containing prefixes or suffixes.
For Struggling Students:
Students who need extra help may work with partners. If students have trouble coming up with words, help them brainstorm a list of some to use.
For ELL Students:
ELL students may need another explanation of the meaning of the prefix or suffix before thinking of words that contain the prefix or suffix.
