Today we will learn more about prefixes, root words, and suffixes by playing Word Round-Up.
2. Choose a student to help you model how to play the game. Complete each step together with the class.
Each person will choose a sticky note from the bag. You will attach the note to your shirt so that everyone can read it.
Let the student choose a sticky note and attach it to his/her shirt.
3. Choose a sticky note that forms a word with the student’s sticky note and attach it to your shirt.
Now, I will walk around quietly and try to find someone with whom I can make a match. Look, I found __________. What word do we make?
The pair will say the word together.
Practice

6. As a wrap-up, you may ask each pair to write their word on the board or a piece of chart paper.
Adjust
For Advanced Students:
When these students have made a match, ask them to recirculate and try to make a different word with a new partner.
For Struggling Students:
Ask these students to write down the word that they make on a sheet of paper and have them circle the prefix or suffix.
For ELL Students:
ELL students may need an explanation of the meaning of the root words before adding a prefix or suffix.
