What to Do
Prepare
Print out a copy of the Prefix/Suffix and Root Word Connection Boxes graphic organizer for each student in the class. Create a large version of the Prefix/Suffix and Root Word Connection Boxes graphic organizer on chart paper.
Write a prefix, suffix, or root word in one of the top boxes in the Prefix/Suffix and Root Word Connection Boxes graphic organizer.
The Prefix/Suffix and Root Word Connection Boxes graphic organizer will eventually show multiple words that have the same prefix, suffix, or root word.
Model/Instruct
1. Review the meaning of prefixes, suffixes, and root words with the class.
2. Provide an example of a root word, a word with a prefix, and a word with a suffix.
Today we will learn more about prefixes, suffixes, and root words by completing this worksheet.
3. Model how to use the Prefix/Suffix and Root Word Connection Boxes graphic organizer by writing a prefix, suffix, or root word in the top box. Students will complete one section of their graphic organizer as the teacher models the lesson.

- Write it in the box underneath.

- Write it in the next box.
- Who can tell us another word that contains this (prefix, suffix, or root word)?

- Write it in the fourth box.
Practice
4. Have the students complete the Prefix/Suffix and Root Word Connection Boxes graphic organizer.
Now it’s your turn to complete the rest of the worksheet by coming up with words that contain prefixes, suffixes, or root words. Remember to complete each part of the worksheet.
5. Walk around the classroom to monitor the students’ performance on this task.
6. As a wrap-up, you may ask students to share their work.
Adjust
For Advanced Students:
Encourage these students to come up with more than four words. They can add boxes for additional words. You may even choose to have a contest to see who can come up with the most words using a given prefix, suffix, or root word.
For Struggling Students:
Students who need extra help may work with partners. If students have trouble coming up with words, help them brainstorm a list of some to use.
For ELL Students:
ELL students may need an explanation of the meaning of the prefix, suffix, or root word before thinking of other words that contain the prefix, suffix, or root word.
