What to Do
Prepare
Print out a copy of the Prefix/Suffix and Root Word Math Equations worksheet for each student in the class.
Create a large version of the Prefix/Suffix and Root Word Math Equations worksheet on chart paper.
Display a prefix or suffix with its meaning.
Model/Instruct
1. Review the meaning of the prefix or suffix with the class.
2. Provide an example of a word using the prefix or suffix.
Today, we will learn more about prefixes and suffixes by completing this worksheet.
3. Model how to use the Prefix/Suffix and Root Word Math Equations worksheet with the prefix or suffix that you are reviewing.
4. Provide three examples.
5. Students will complete their worksheet as the teacher models the lesson.
If you are reviewing a prefix, write it in the triangle. If you are reviewing a suffix, write it in the circle.
- Who can give us a word that we can add (selected prefix/suffix) to?
- Write the root word in either the circle (with a prefix) or the triangle (with a suffix).
- What does this word become when I add (selected prefix/suffix)?
- Write the word with the added prefix/ suffix in the square.
- How can I read this equation?
- That’s right. (prefix or root word) + (root word or suffix) = new word .
Repeat for two more examples.

Adjust
For Advanced Students:
Encourage these students to come up with at least five words for each prefix or suffix. You may even choose to have a contest to see who can come up with the most words using the given prefix or suffix.
For Struggling Students:
Students who need extra help may work with partners. If students have trouble coming up with root words, help them brainstorm a list of some to use.
For ELL Students:
ELL students may need an explanation of the meaning of the prefix or suffix before thinking of root words that take that prefix or suffix.
