Group Size: | Small Group, Large Group, Whole Class |
Length: | 15 minutes |
Goal: | Given a Bingo Board, students will expand their knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, and root words by playing bingo. |
Materials: Bingo Board (print here), paper bag, pencils, index cards, board or chart paper.
What to Do
Prepare
Print out one copy of the Bingo Board for each student.
Write each prefix and suffix that the students have learned on an index card.
Write a list of root words on the board or a piece of chart paper.
Model/Instruct
1. Review the root words you have displayed.
Today, we will learn about prefixes, root words, and suffixes by playing bingo. Before we begin, you will need to make your bingo board. Write one root word from this list in each box.
2. Allow students time to create their bingo boards.
In this bag are cards with prefixes and suffixes on them. Each of you will reach into the bag, take a card, and read the prefix or suffix out loud.
Then, you will look at your boards to see if you can make a word using that prefix or suffix. Let’s say the first card says –y. You will look on your board to see if you have a word to which you can attach a –y.
If you have a word, like health, that you can add –y to, then you will write the new word, healthy, in that box.
When you have a row (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal) of completed boxes, call out, “Bingo.” The first person to do this is the winner!
Practice
3. Have your students play the game.
Now, we are going to play Prefix/Suffix Bingo. Remember to write the new word in the correct box.
4. Walk around the classroom to monitor the students’ progress during the game.
5. Check to make sure that all of the words on the winning board are indeed real words.
Adjust
For Advanced Students:
You may wish to have these students play until their entire board is filled out.
For Struggling Students:
Have these students write down a prediction of appropriate prefixes or suffixes for each word on their board. That way, when the prefix or suffix is called they will be prepared.
For ELL Students:
Encourage these students to choose familiar root words for their boards. Make sure they know the meaning of each root word on their board before playing.
