What to do
- Review meanings of prefixes en-, em-, fore-, de-, auto-, after-, con-, and mid-. Ask students to define words using the prefixes.
- Show examples of prefix and root word cards and how to combine them to form words. Also model a nonsense word, like "dehappy." Ask if it is a word.
- Explain rules of concentration game. Lay cards face down. On your turn, turn over two cards. If the two cards make a word, you have a match. Say the word, explain what it means. If you don't know, others can help you. Keep both cards. If you don't have a match, turn cards back over face down.
- Keep taking turns until all cards are matched.
- When you're done, record the words you created on the recording sheet. Write the word, the definition, and draw a picture illustrating the word.
