Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Game
Grade: K, 1
Group Size: Small Group
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: Index Cards, bucket
Goal: Given printed word segments, students can correctly blend them together to form a regular word (c, at -> “caaat” -> “cat”).
Items: All letter sounds learned so far

What to do

  1. Before introducing the game, create a list of CVC words (or any other word pattern you want students to practice). Copy words onto index cards in parts. For example, for the word cat, write “ca” on one card and write a “t” on a second card. Place all index cards in a bucket.
  2. Today we are going to play a game called Build a Word. This bucket is filled with word parts. Your job is to use those parts to build a word. Do you think you can do that?
  3. When it is your turn, you must pick two cards from the bucket. Put those parts together and sound out your word.
  4. If it is a real word, you can keep your word. If it is a nonsense word, you must put the cards back in the bucket. Then it is the next person’s turn to go. Keep going around the circle, until the bucket is empty.
  5. The person with the most cards at the end is the winner.
  6. If a student is struggling, call on him individually in order to ensure he gets practice with the skill.
  7. Observe students. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
