Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Game
Grade: K, 1
Group Size: Whole Class
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: Index cards, music
Goal: Given printed word segments, students can correctly blend them together to form a regular word (c, at -> “caaat” -> “cat”).
Items: All letter sounds learned so far

What to do

  1. Before introducing the game, create a list of CVC words (or any other word pattern you want students to practice). Copy words onto index cards in parts. For example, for the word "cat," write “ca” on one card and write “t” on a second card. Make enough index cards so that each student can have one.
  2. Today we are going to play a game called Mix, Mix, Match! I am going to give each of you a card with letters on it. Some of your cards will have one letter, and some will have more than one letter. When the music starts you need to walk around the room with your card.
  3. Then, when the music stops I am going to say “mix.” When you hear me say “mix” you should trade cards with someone in the room. Say the sound or sounds on your card aloud to the person you give it to. We will repeat that a few times.
  4. The last time the music stops I am going to say “match.” When you hear me say “match” you need to find a person who has a card that matches yours. You are trying to make a word.
  5. Let’s say Suzy has a card with “a-t” on it. Let’s sound that out together. Aaat…at. And let’s say Mary has a card with “c” on it. What sound does that make? If we put “c” and “at” together, what word is that? Good. That is cat. They should find each other when I say “match.”
  6. Then I am going to go around to each set of partners. When I get to you, together you should say, “Our word is cat.”
  7. Does anybody have any questions?
  8. Observe students. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
