What to do
- Before introducing the game, create a list of CVC words (or any other word pattern you want students to practice). Copy words onto index cards. Divide students into partners.
- Today you are going to play tic-tac-toe with your partner. Raise your hand if you already know how to play tic-tac-toe. Good. Clarify instructions if any students are unsure of the rules.
- I am going to give each set of partners a tic-tac-toe board. I am also going to give you some word cards. This is how my version of tic-tac-toe is a little different. Before you can take your turn, you must pick a word from the pile on your desk, sound out the word, then say the word.
- Your partner will give you a thumbs up or a thumbs down. If you sound out and say the word correctly, you can take your turn and make a mark on the board. If you don’t sound out and say the word correctly, then your turn is skipped.
- Watch how I do it. Demonstrate picking a card. Show your card to the students. Now I am going to sound out my word. Caaat…Cat! Thumbs up or thumbs down? Great. Now I can take my turn on the tic-tac-toe board.
- Observe students. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
