Sounding out accuracy, Word Potato

What to do
- Before introducing the game, create a list of CVC words (or any other word pattern you want students to practice). Copy words onto index cards. Place all the cards in a bucket.
- Today we are going to play a game sort of like Hot Potato. Raise your hand if you know how to play Hot Potato. Good.
- Have kids sit in a circle. This basket is going to be our “hot potato.” If you are the last one to hold the basket, then you must pick a word from the basket and sound it out for us. If you get the word correct, you stay in the game. If you sound out the word incorrectly, you are out!
- Watch how I do it. Demonstrate picking a card. Show your card to the students. Now I am going to sound out my word. Caaat…Cat! Thumbs up or thumbs down? Great. Now I can stay in the game.
- If a student is struggling, call on him individually in order to ensure he gets practice with the skill.
- Observe students. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
