What to do
- Before beginning this activity, think of 10 level-appropriate words that your students should be able to sound out and spell.
- Divide students into teams of two to four people and hand each team a bucket of lowercase plastic alphabet letters. (Alphabet magnets or letters written on index cards are good alternatives if you do not own plastic alphabet letters). Make sure that there are enough copies of popular letters, so that students will be able to spell out words with repeat letters.
- Today we are going to play a spelling game. I will tell everyone a word. After I say the word, each team must race to spell the word using its plastic alphabet letters. Once your team has finished spelling the word, raise your hands and I will check to see if your word is spelled correctly. Each team gets one point if its word is spelled correctly, but the first team to spell the word correctly gets two points (i.e., one point for spelling the word correctly and an additional point for spelling it quickly).
- For example, if I say the word, “cake,” you must work with your teammates to spell the word quickly using your plastic alphabet letters. Model this by spelling out “cake” with plastic alphabet tiles. Remember to raise your hand when you finish. c-a-k-e… cake!
- After each round, as reinforcement for the entire class, ask the class and/or specific students, How do you spell, (word, e.g., “cake”)? Or, ask specific students to segment the words covered in previous rounds.
- If all teams spell the word incorrectly, you can either tell them the spelling or give them a second chance.
