Materials: Index Word Cards, Sentence Strips
Goal: Given a sentence, the student will use context clues to determine the meaning of an unfamiliar word.
Items: Context Clues

What to do

  1. Choose one of the sentence strips.
  2. Read the sentence on the sentence strip paying close attention to the underlined word.
  3. Now, be a detective and try to find words in the rest of the sentence that would be clues to help you solve the meaning of the underlined word.
  4. On a card, list the underlined words, the clues you used and your meaning in the appropriate column.
  5. Make sure you reread the sentence so that the meaning you chose makes sense!

About this activity

One difficulty that I notice my students face when reading, is that when they come to an unfamiliar word they do not know the meaning of, they don't know what to do. The purpose of this activity is to teach my third graders strategies that will help them be a "CONTEXT CLUES DETECTIVE!"
