Materials: Vocabulary Flip Book (print here), scissors, board or chart paper

What to Do

Prepare

Print out one copy of the Vocabulary Flip Book for each student.

Prepare one flip book per student in advance. First, cut around the border of the flip book. Next, cut on the two dotted lines. Last, fold the top part of the flip book over the bottom part.

Display three vocabulary words that students have already learned on the board or on chart paper.

Model/Instruct

1. Review the vocabulary words you have chosen for this lesson.

Today, we will become more familiar with these vocabulary words by creating a Vocabulary Flip Book. Before we begin, let’s review the vocabulary words we are going to study today.

Direct the class’s attention to the displayed vocabulary words. State each word and have students repeat after you.

2. Show students how to complete their Vocabulary Flip Books.

I will show you how to complete your flip book first. Then you will have a chance to complete the flip book yourselves.

Model how to complete the flip book by writing a vocabulary word, its definition, a sentence containing the word, and examples of the word in the designated sections of your flip book. Have students write the same information in their own flip books.

Practice

3. Have students complete flip book pages for the remaining two words.

Now, it is your turn to complete the rest of your Vocabulary Flip Book. Remember to put the words, definitions, sentences, and examples in the correct places.

Encourage students to complete this activity without your assistance unless they are really struggling. For additional information on helping students, consult the section below.

4. Have each student share a page from his or her Vocabulary Flip Book. Make sure that you go over all three vocabulary words at this time. Afterwards, encourage students to refer to their flip books when they come across the three vocabulary words.

Consider providing additional empty flip book pages to students so that they can add new words to their flip books over time. They can use their flip books as a personal dictionary.

Adjust

For Advanced Students:

Provide more than three words for this activity. If you are using words that have multiple meanings, have students write multiple definitions, sentences, and examples of the words.

For Struggling Students:

Have struggling students draw a small picture of each word next to the definition instead of writing a sentence. Help them come up with a sentence for each word orally.

For ELL Students:

Have ELL students draw a small picture of each word next to the definition instead of writing a sentence. Help them come up with a sentence for each word orally. Point out cognates where applicable.
