What Do You Know
From FreeReading
Activity Type: Build Fluency |
Activity Form: Standard |
Grade: 1, 2, 3 |
Group Size: Individual, Pair, Small Group |
Length: 5 minutes |
Materials: Paper and pencil, magnetic letters |
Goal: Given irregular words, students become familiar with them by rhyming them with other words they know. |
Items: Any irregular words your students are learning |
What to do
- Choose an irregular word you want your students to master.
- Say the word to your students. This is a word we've covered before. Use your magnetic letters to make it, and then write it down on your piece of paper.
- Ask your students to think of a word they know that rhymes with the irregular word.
- If the word has the same rhyme, have students create this word with magnetic letters and then write it down. They can do this for as many rhymes for the word as they can generate.
- Compare the rhyme words with the first word. Do they look the same? Do they look different? How? This exercise is meant to make irregular words seem more familiar to students. If any students have problems with the exercise, give them help and note their progress in an Activity Log.
