What to do

  1. Write the words you want to practice with onto pieces of masking tape with a permanent marker.
  2. Tape the words randomly on the ball so that no words are touching.
  3. Gather your students together on the rug.
  4. Today, we are going to play a game called “Beach Ball Word Bounce.” During this game, we will throw a beach ball back and forth. Every time you catch the ball, I want you to read the word where one of your fingers lands. Let me show you how to read the word near your finger. Then I will show you how to throw the ball. I will throw it to ______ so _______ please be ready.
  5. Demonstrate how to look at one of your fingers and read a word out loud. Then throw the beach ball to the child you chose.
  6. Let’s start! Remember to throw the ball nicely and to throw it to someone you have not thrown it to before.
  7. Play the game for about 10 minutes.
  8. Excellent job! You are great at throwing, and at reading.
  9. Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
