Word-Form Recognition Accuracy, Memory
From FreeReading
Activity Type: Build Accuracy |
Activity Form: Game |
Grade: K |
Group Size: Small Group |
Length: 5 minutes |
Materials: 5 picture cards and 5 cards with the corresponding words (e.g., a picture of a cat, a card with the word 'cat') |
Goal: Given a written regular word, the student can say the word with automaticity ( abc -> "abc" ). |
Items: All word-recognition words learned so far |
What to do
- Lay out ten cards face down: ten of the cards have pictures of objects on them; the other ten each have the name of one of those objects on them. (You can vary the difficulty level by increasing or decreasing the number of cards.) The words should be word-recognition words that students have already learned.
- Teach students the game of Memory, in which they take turns flipping over two cards to try to match the picture with the word. If a student has difficulty reading a word, help him. When a student makes a match, he keeps the cards. The student with the most cards at the end wins.
- When the game ends, mix up the cards and play again.
