Grade: K, 1, 2, 3
Group Size: Small Group, Whole Class
Length: 10 minutes
Materials: One chart-sized text (written according to the grade level of the group) which includes 10 regular words throughout the text, the set of words used in the text each on a word card next to the text, slates and dry erase markers for each student
Goal: Given a written regular word, the student can find and write the word with automaticity ( abc -> "abc" )
Items: Any set of word-recognition words learned so far. For a list of regular words, consult the Sounding out word cards.

What to do

  1. Place text on the board so that all students can see it. Feel free to use an overhead projection of the text instead.
  2. Pass out slates and markers.
  3. Today, we are going to play a game called “Find Me” where we will read a text as a group and find the regular word or words we know within each sentence. We will read each sentence as a group. After each sentence, I want you to reread the sentence in your brain. When you are reading it to yourself, think about what regular words you already know in that sentence. Try to find that word out of our “word bank” next to the text. Write that word on your slate and hold the slate up above your head. I will give you about 30 seconds each to read the sentence to yourself, find the word, and write it down. I will then look at everyone’s slate and reveal the hidden regular word! Let’s practice.
  4. Model using the first sentence. After you’ve written the regular word on your slate, hold it up for the class to see. Then, take the word out of the word bank and begin the game.
  5. Read each sentence one-by-one. Follow the instructions for each sentence.
  6. Good job, regular word detectives! You found every word in our word bank! Way to go!
  7. Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
