What to do

  1. Have students sit in their seats/desks.
  2. Today, we are going to play a game called “Word Worm.” In this game, I will say a word aloud and then have a student write the word on a piece of circle paper. We are going to attach the circles together and when we put them all together, it will be one gigantic word worm.
  3. Pass out one pencil to each student.
  4. I will now ask students to spell the regular words we already know. When I ask you, you will be given a word worm circle to write the word upon. When you are writing the word, I want you to say aloud the letters you used to make the word.
  5. Start the game by asking students to write regular words they already know. Make sure students are reading their letters out loud so other students can hear how the word is spelled. Have other students give a “thumbs up” signal if the word is spelled correctly and a “thumbs down” signal if the word is spelled incorrectly.
  6. Every time a student writes a word, put the circle together on the board with the tape.
  7. Good work, students! Look at our Word Worm. Let’s read all our words together.
  8. Read the words together.
  9. Good job making a word worm and knowing how to spell these regular words!
  10. Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
