Lesson Type: | Reintroduce |
Grade: | 2, 3 |
Group Size: | Individual, Pair, Small Group, Large Group, Whole Class |
Length: | 10 minutes |
Goal: | Given three vocabulary words, students will refine their understanding of these words using context clues and prior knowledge. |
Materials: 3-Word Context Box (print here), board or chart paper
What to Do
Prepare
Print out a copy of the 3-Word Context Box graphic organizer for each student in the class. Create a large version of the 3-Word Context Box on chart paper to model the activity. Use the chart paper or the board to display vocabulary words with their meanings.
Model/Instruct
1. Review the vocabulary words you wish to cover with the class.
2. Model how to use the graphic organizer. Involve your students as you explain, filling in the 3-Word Context Box as they respond to your questions.
Today, we will learn more about our new vocabulary words by completing a worksheet.
Who can remember one of the new vocabulary words we came across in our reading? Who can tell us a clue from the story as to the meaning of this word? Who can tell us something they know about this word from their own experience?
We will use the story clues and what we already know to write a definition for this word. Who can give us a definition?
Call on students to share ideas to complete the 3-Word Context Box graphic organizer.
Practice
3. Have the students complete the 3-Word Context Box on their own. Students can complete graphic organizers for the same words or be assigned different words to work on in pairs or groups.
Now it’s your turn to complete a word box for three vocabulary words. Remember to complete each part.
4. Walk around to monitor the students’ performance. As a wrap-up, have volunteers share their work.
Adjust
For Advanced Students:
After they have finished, allow these students to look up the vocabulary words in a dictionary. Ask them to compare their definitions and the dictionary definition.
For Struggling Students:
Give students who need extra help the chance to work with a partner.
For ELL Students:
ELL students may have a hard time with the What I know column of the graphic organizer. They are likely to be very unfamiliar with the new word. You may choose to allow them to leave this column blank and create their own definition based on the story clues only.
